3. Who can order and where we deliver
3.1 You must be 18 or over to place an order.
3.2 Our products are for personal use. You may not buy them for resale.
3.3 We deliver to addresses in the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries shown at checkout. We may decline an order for delivery anywhere else and, if we have already taken payment, we will refund it in full.
3.4 You can buy a Gift Plan for someone of any age, but you are responsible for giving us their correct name and postal address. Please also read clauses 4.4 and 15.6.
4. What we sell
4.1 Letters From The Ancient is a series of letters posted to you once a month, each from a different philosopher. Each Letter is written in the philosopher’s voice and is inspired by their teachings. Each envelope contains the letter, the philosopher’s life, a welcome note, Before You Begin, a journey map, a short ritual, a brass key, The Memento and a blank page for your reply. Every new reader starts with the first Letter in the first series, from Epictetus, and the Letters then arrive in order, one each month. The first series has 12 Letters.
4.2 The Letters are works of creative interpretation. They are not translations or historical documents, and they don’t claim to record the actual words or views of any philosopher.
4.3 Photos on the Website show real Letters and contents, but colours, papers, keys and Mementos vary from envelope to envelope. Each reader’s key and Memento is different each month.
4.4 Each envelope contains small items, including a brass key. These are not toys and are not suitable for children under three years old. Please keep them away from young children.
4.5 You can buy a Monthly Plan, a Fixed-term Plan, or a Gift Plan. Our current plans and prices are set out in clause 6.1.
5. Placing an order
5.1 To place an order:
(a) choose a plan or product and add it to your basket;
(b) enter your details and, for a Gift Plan, the Recipient’s name and postal address;
(c) check the order summary, which shows the price, how often you will be charged and, for a Subscription, how automatic renewal works. You can go back and correct any errors before you pay;
(d) tick the separate box to confirm that you agree to these terms and for a Subscription, that it will renew automatically until you cancel; and
(e) pay.
5.2 Our contract with you starts when we email you to confirm your order. For a Subscription, that email will also set out the renewal terms, the price and how often you will be charged, and how to cancel. Please keep it for your records.
5.3 We may decline an order, for example if an offer has closed, we can’t deliver to the address given or we can’t take payment. If we do, we will tell you and refund anything you have paid in full.
5.4 Each plan is a separate order. If you buy more than one plan for the same address, you’ll receive a Letter for each plan every month, and each plan starts with the first Letter in the series.
6. Prices and payment
6.1 Our current plans and prices are:
Plan | Price (US and other countries) | Price (UK) | Letters | Renews automatically? |
Monthly Plan | $34.99 each month | £24.95 each month | One each month | Yes, every month until you cancel |
Six-month Plan | $191.94, paid once ($31.99 a Letter) | £137.70, paid once (£22.95 a Letter) | 6 | No |
Twelve-month Plan | $359.88, paid once ($29.99 a Letter) | £257.40, paid once (£21.45 a Letter) | 12 | No |

Winter Season gift | $89.99, paid once | £64.95, paid once | 3 (December, January and February) | No |
6.2 All prices are in US dollars, or in pounds sterling for customers in the United Kingdom, and include postage to the country of delivery.
6.3 For letters posted to the United States, our prices include any US import duties and customs charges, so there is nothing more to pay on delivery. If you are ever asked to pay any import charges on delivery, please let us know and we’ll reimburse them. For Letters posted to other countries outside the United Kingdom, the country of delivery may charge import duties or taxes, which you’ll need to pay.
6.4 Payments are processed by Wix Payments (for cards and Apple Pay) and PayPal, and we don’t see or store your full card details. If you live in the United Kingdom, payments are processed by Stripe.
6.5 By ordering a Subscription, you authorise us to charge your payment card as described in clause 7 until you cancel. Please keep your card details up to date.
6.6 If a payment fails, we will email you and try again over the following seven days. We won’t post your next Letter until the payment has been made. If it is still unpaid after 14 days, we may end your Subscription by email.
6.7 If your bank charges a currency conversion or overseas transaction fee, that fee is a matter between you and your bank.
6.8 If we make an obvious error in a price or description on the Website, we will tell you and give you the choice of continuing at the correct price or cancelling for a full refund.
6.9 We refund to the card you paid with. We start a refund within two Business Days of agreeing it or of your cancellation, and it normally reaches your account within seven Business Days, depending on your bank.
7. The Monthly Plan
7.1 The Monthly Plan continues from month to month until you or we end it. We post you one Letter each month.
7.2 We take your first payment when you order. That payment covers your first Letter, which we post:
(a) on that month’s Posting Date, if you order before the 10th day of the month; or
(b) on the next month’s Posting Date, if you order on or after the 10th day of the month.
7.3 After that, we charge the monthly price shown in clause 6.1 on the Payment Date each month. Each payment covers the next Letter we post after that payment.
7.4 Your Monthly Plan renews automatically each month until you cancel. To avoid the next payment, cancel before your next Payment Date. For example, if you ordered on 20 November, your next payment will be taken on 20 December and will cover the Letter posted in January. If you cancel on or before 19 December, we won’t take that payment and you won’t receive the January Letter. If you cancel after a payment has been taken, we’ll refund it if we haven’t yet posted the Letter it covers.
7.5 Your Monthly Plan doesn’t end after the twelfth Letter. It continues into the next series of Letters, from new philosophers, until you cancel. If the next series isn’t ready in time, we’ll tell you and won’t take any payment until we can post your next Letter.
8. Six-month, Twelve-month and Founding Circle plans
8.1 You pay for a Fixed-term Plan in full, in advance, when you order. It covers six or 12 Letters. We post the first Letter as set out in clause 7.2 and then one Letter on each Posting Date until all the Letters have been posted. Fixed-term Plans don’t renew, and we won’t take any further payments.
8.2 The Founding Circle Plan is a Twelve-month Plan offered at a reduced price to the first 100 customers. Each Founding Circle reader is told their number, from one to 100, and the offer closes when the 100th place is taken. It is limited to one per person. In all other respects, the terms for the Twelve-month Plan apply.
8.3 You can cancel a Fixed-term Plan at any time. If you do, we’ll refund the Letters you’ve paid for that we haven’t yet posted, as set out in clause 11.
9. Reminders and price changes
9.1 We email you a receipt for every Subscription payment, showing the amount, what it is for and how to cancel.
9.2 For a Monthly Plan, we also email you a reminder at least once a year, showing your plan, the price, how often you are charged and how to cancel.
9.3 We may change the price of the Monthly Plan. If we do, we’ll give you at least 30 days’ notice by email that your Monthly Plan will end. You can then choose to join again at the new price. We won’t charge you the new price unless you join again.
9.4 The price of a Fixed-term Plan you have already paid for won’t change.
10. Cancelling a subscription
10.1 You can cancel a Subscription at any time, without giving a reason:
(a) Online: signing in to your account at pandorasoul.com/account/my-subscriptions and selecting Cancel; or
(b) By email: writing to hello@pandorasoul.com from the email address you ordered with, or giving us enough details to identify your order.
(c) UK customers: if you bought through our UK checkout, using the link in your order confirmation or any receipt to manage your subscription and selecting Cancel, or by email as above.
10.2 Online cancellation takes effect immediately and we will confirm it on screen and by email. Cancellation by email takes effect when we receive your email, and we will confirm it by email within two Business Days. If your email reaches us before your next Payment Date, we won’t take that payment, even if our confirmation follows later.
10.3 We won’t ask you to call us or try to talk you out of cancelling.
10.4 When you cancel, we stop all future payments and refund any Letters you have paid for that we haven’t yet posted (see clause 11).
10.5 Cancelling does not affect your rights under clause 11 or the law.
11. Cancelling a plan and refunds
11.1 You can cancel any plan at any time by emailing us or, for a Monthly Plan, as set out in clause 10. If you cancel, we’ll refund any Letters you have paid for that we haven’t yet posted. Letters already posted aren’t refunded, but lost or damaged Letters are replaced under clause 13.
11.2 We refund each Letter not yet posted at the price per Letter you paid, as shown in clause 6.1, or one third of the price for the Winter Season gift.
11.3 For a Gift Plan, any refund is paid to you as the buyer.
11.4 This doesn’t affect your legal rights, for example if a Letter is faulty or not as described.
11.5 If you live in the United Kingdom, you also have a legal right to cancel your plan within 14 days after the day your first Letter is delivered (or, for a gift, the day the Recipient’s first Letter is delivered), without giving a reason. To cancel, please email us. We’ll refund everything you’ve paid for the plan, including postage, within 14 days after we receive back any Letter already delivered, or you show us you’ve posted it back, whichever is sooner. You’ll need to pay the cost of posting it back.
12. Posting and delivery
12.1 We post each Letter by the Posting Date for the month in which it is due. Your first Letter is posted as set out in clause 7.2.
12.2 Letters are sent from Edinburgh by tracked post. Delivery to the United States usually takes three to seven Business Days after posting, but this is an estimate and customs checks can cause delays. Delivery within the United Kingdom usually takes up to three Business Days after posting.
12.3 If we can’t post a Letter by the date we have told you, we will email you before that date with a new date and offer you the choice of waiting or cancelling that order for a full refund of the amount paid for any Letters not yet posted.
12.4 Please update your address in your account or tell us by email at least five Business Days before the Posting Date. A change made after that may only apply from the following month.
12.5 A Letter is our responsibility until it is delivered to the address you gave us.
13. Lost or damaged Letters
13.1 If a Letter has not arrived within 20 Business Days after posting, or arrives damaged, please email us within 60 days after its Posting Date. If tracking doesn’t show the Letter as delivered, or it arrived damaged, we’ll send a replacement, key included, at no cost. If we can’t replace a Letter, we’ll refund the amount paid for it.
13.2 If a Letter is sent to an incorrect address that you gave us, we will try to help, but we may charge you the cost of a replacement.
14. Gifts
14.1 You can buy the Winter Season gift. It is paid in full when you order, does not renew and ends once all three Letters have been posted. You can also buy a Fixed-term Plan for someone else by giving their address at checkout, and this clause 14 then applies to it.
14.2 The Winter Season gift is three Letters, posted in December, January and February. It is available to order until the end of 11.59 pm UK time (6.59 pm Eastern Time) on 9 December. We will email you a printable card to give on Christmas morning.
14.3 When you buy a Gift Plan, our contract is with you. The Recipient can’t cancel or change the Gift Plan, but we will deal with them directly about delivery and lost or damaged Letters. Any refund will be paid to you.
14.4 We will include your name and any gift message you add at checkout with the first Letter. We won’t tell the Recipient the price.
14.5 Please only give us a Recipient’s details if you’re confident they would be happy for you to do so. Our privacy and cookie policy explains how we use them.
15. Writing back and LettersBack
15.1 You are welcome to write back:
(a) By email: hello@pandorasoul.com; or
(b) By post: Suite 1A, 121 Giles Street, Edinburgh, EH6 6BZ, United Kingdom.
We read every reply, but can’t always reply personally.
15.2 Your replies remain yours and we won’t publish any part of a reply unless you give us permission. You can give permission by ticking the box on the reply page or by saying so clearly in your letter or email.
15.3 If you give permission, you allow us, without payment, to publish your reply or any part of it, without your name, on https://www.pandorasoul.com/lettersback, in our letters and emails to readers and on our social media accounts and in any printed collection of readers’ letters. We may shorten it and remove anything that could identify you or anyone else. We won’t add words you did not write or change your meaning. Each month, we may also answer one reply in full, in the philosopher’s voice, on https://www.pandorasoul.com/lettersback.
15.4 From the second Letter onwards, each Letter may open with themes drawn from readers’ replies to the Letter before. We never include names, and we only quote a reader’s own words with their permission.
15.5 If your reply mentions your health, beliefs, sexuality or other private matters, we will only publish that part if your permission clearly covers it and you have confirmed this when we ask you.
15.6 We won’t publish a reply from anyone we know or believe to be under 18.
15.7 By giving permission, you confirm that the reply is your own writing.
15.8 You can withdraw your permission at any time by emailing us. We will remove your words from the Website and our social media accounts within 14 days. We can’t recall Letters or emails already sent, or copies that other people have shared.
15.9 We may choose not to publish any reply, and we do not pay for replies we publish.
15.10 We don’t monitor replies for urgent concerns and can’t respond to emergencies. Please see clause 16.
16. Not therapy or professional advice
16.1 Everything we offer is for reflection, enjoyment and education. It is not medical, psychological, legal or financial advice, and it is not therapy or treatment. The Letters and any correspondence with us do not create a therapist and client relationship.
16.2 If you are struggling, please speak to a qualified professional. In the United States, you can call or text 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org, and in an emergency call 911. In the United Kingdom, you can call Samaritans free on 116 123, and in an emergency call 999.
17. Our content
17.1 The Letters, rituals, Website text, photos and other materials we provide belong to us or our licensors.
17.2 You are welcome to keep, reread and share your own Letters with friends and family, and to share a photo or short extract on social media with credit to us. Otherwise, you may not copy, sell or publish them, in whole or in part, or use them to train or develop any artificial intelligence system, without our written permission.
18. IMPORTANT: Our responsibility to you
18.1 We will provide what you order with reasonable care and skill and as described.
18.2 If we break these terms or fail to use reasonable care and skill, we are responsible for loss you suffer that is a foreseeable result. Loss is foreseeable if it was obvious it would happen, or if both of us knew it might happen when the contract was made.
18.3 Our products are for personal use only. We are not responsible for any loss of profit, business or opportunity.
18.4 SUBJECT TO CLAUSE 18.5, OUR TOTAL RESPONSIBILITY TO YOU UNDER OR IN CONNECTION WITH THESE TERMS IS LIMITED TO THE AMOUNT YOU HAVE PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS BEFORE THE EVENT GIVING RISE TO YOUR CLAIM.
18.5 Nothing in these terms limits or excludes our responsibility for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation, or for anything else that can’t be limited or excluded by law. Nothing in these terms affects your legal rights as a consumer, including your rights under the law of the state where you live. If you live in the United Kingdom, this includes your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015. You can get advice on your rights from Citizens Advice or, in Scotland, Consumer Advice Scotland.
19. Events outside our control
19.1 We are not responsible for delays or failures caused by events outside our reasonable control, such as postal strikes, extreme weather or customs hold-ups. If that happens, we will tell you as soon as we can and take reasonable steps to limit the delay.
19.2 If an event outside our control delays a Letter by more than 30 days, you can cancel and we will refund the amount paid for any Letters not yet posted.
20. If we end your subscription
20.1 We may end your Subscription by email if a payment remains unpaid as described in clause 6.6, or if you seriously break these terms.
20.2 We may stop offering Letters From The Ancient or any plan by giving you at least 30 days’ notice by email. If we do, we will refund the amount paid for any Letters not yet posted.
21. Complaints
21.1 If you’re unhappy with anything we’ve supplied or with how we’ve dealt with you, please tell us:
(a) By email: hello@pandorasoul.com; or
(b) By post: Suite 1A, 121 Giles Street, Edinburgh, EH6 6BZ, United Kingdom.
Please include your name, your order number if you have one, what has gone wrong and how you’d like us to put it right.
21.2 You don’t need to make a complaint to cancel a Subscription or report a lost or damaged Letter. Please follow clause 10 or clause 13 instead.
21.3 We’ll acknowledge your complaint within two Business Days. We’ll look into it and aim to give you a full response, including what we’ll do to put things right, within 14 days. If we need longer, for example because we’re waiting to hear from the Post Office, we’ll tell you why and when to expect our response.
21.4 If you’re not satisfied with our response, please reply and tell us why. We’ll review your complaint again and give you our final response within 14 days.
21.5 If we agree to a refund, we’ll make it as set out in clause 6.9.
21.6 We’d be grateful if you’d contact us before asking your bank or card provider to reverse a payment, as we can usually put things right more quickly. This doesn’t affect your right to do so.
21.7 Nothing in this clause affects your legal rights or your right to bring a claim as set out in clause 24.
22. Changes to these terms
22.1 We may update these terms, for example to reflect changes in the law or in our products. The version that applies to an order is the one shown when you placed it.
22.2 If we make a change that affects an active Subscription, we will email you at least 30 days before it takes effect, and you can cancel before then. Price changes are dealt with in clause 9.
23. Other important terms
23.1 Assignment: We may transfer our rights and obligations under these terms to another organisation. We will tell you if we do and, if you are unhappy, you can cancel and receive a refund for any Letters paid for but not yet posted. You may not transfer your rights or obligations under these terms without our written agreement.
23.2 Third party rights: These terms are between you and us. No one else, including a Recipient, has any right to enforce any of them.
23.3 Severance: If a court decides that any part of these terms is invalid or unenforceable, the rest will continue to apply.
23.4 No waiver: If we delay in enforcing any of these terms, we can still enforce them later.
23.5 Notices: We’ll send any notice under these terms by email to the address you gave us when you ordered, or any updated address in your account. Please send any notice to us by email at hello@pandorasoul.com. An email is treated as received when it is sent, unless the sender receives a message saying it hasn’t been delivered. Please keep your email address up to date. This clause doesn’t apply to documents served in legal proceedings. It also doesn’t limit the other ways of cancelling or contacting us set out in clauses 10 and 21.
24. Governing law and jurisdiction
24.1 These terms are governed by the law of Scotland.
24.2 If you live outside Scotland, you also benefit from any mandatory consumer protection laws of the country, state or territory where you live. Nothing in these terms affects those protections.
24.3 You can bring a claim about these terms in the Scottish courts. You can also bring a claim in the courts of the place where you live, where your local law allows. If we need to bring a claim against you, we will do so in the courts of the place where you live.
